I’ve been wearing Wrangler 13MWZ jeans for decades. That cut fits my but and thighs really well. So when I decided to try some closer fitting stretch jeans, I figured Wrangler was the logical choice.

My usual size in the 13MWZ jeans is 34W X 34L so, that’s what I ordered in these Authentics Comfort Flex jeans. Also, I ordered them in black which are 99% cotton and 1% spandex. When I put them on they were ridiculously long. So I grabbed a tape measure and a pair of my black 13MWZ jeans that are also labeled 34W X 34L and compared the two pairs of pants.

My older 13MWZ’s which have probably been washed 50 times measured exactly 33″. That makes sense since they are cotton and they probably shrunk 1″ over time. In contrast, these Authentics Comfort Flex jeans measured 35 1/2″. That’s 1 1/2″ longer than the nominal size on the label and 2 1/2″ more than my old jeans that have shrunk. I mean they are comically long.

The length is somewhat surprising because the waist, butt, and thighs are just like the typical Wrangler cut I’ve come to expect. Everything but the length is great. The 1% spandex seems to make a big difference in the fit and the comfort.

So back the first pair are going. I’ve ordered a pair in size 34W X 32L and hopefully they are the same 1 1/2″ too long and will shrink to a nice 32 1/2″ length with a couple of washes.

EDIT 9/23/2018: So the the second pair (34W X 32L) came today. And surprise they measure exactly 32″. They actually hang really well at 32″. So the question now becomes, will they shrink an inch with washing or will they stay 32″ long. There’s no other option. The 34L are way too long and the 32L are just right when new. If they shrink like most cotton jeans, I’ll just have to look for another brand of stretch jeans. I hope these work out because the seat, thighs, and legs fit me really well. To bad the length is not reliable.

The variation in size is a little concerning. If the length can be off by 1 1/2″, how do you know what to order? Would another pair of 34W X 34L in these jeans be that long too? Or is there just a lot of variation in Wrangler’s manufacturing process now that they have moved all their production offshore?

On the other hand, the “stretch” fabric with 1% fabric is impossible to tell apart from regular Wrangler jeans by looking at them or toughing them. That’s a good thing in my mind. The only way to tell these are stretch jeans is to grab the fabric and pull on it. Do that, and you can feel the fabric stretch. Otherwise you’d be hard pressed to tell these are a stretch fabric.

Based on the 32″ length being spot on for length, I raised my rating from 2 stars to 3. I’m hoping I just got that first pair that somehow managed to get through quality control or were mislabeled and I’ll get what I order in the future.

Love these jeans. They have just enough spandex to make them stretch and really soft and comfortable.
