Travelon makes great bags. I really like their clean look, diverse function, and sensible organization. Their travel security bags are also very durable. I really wanted this bag because the larger travel cross-body messenger bag of theirs that I have had for several years is too cumbersome for me now. This smaller bag has many of the features of the cross-body messenger bag–the credit card organizer, the drink holder, security straps, clasps, and card blocking, zippered compartments. The size of this bag is perfect. It’s very roomy despite being compact, and I love that you can switch the strap to make it cross left or right. But from there, it has some significant flaws.
The fact that the strap can be switched leaves it vulnerable. Twice on my first travel with it, the “security lock” on the clasp came undone and the bag just dropped to the ground. Locking it is a two-part process. You have to clip it in, but then push the little button a little click further to keep it from coming open. Nope. Somehow it worked its way “unclocked” and came completely undone twice. I wasn’t too thrilled with that.
Also, the drink holder is very small for the circumference of water bottles that are manufactured now. Maybe 5+ years ago this would have been the right size. But now new bottles are mostly wide in circumference. You will have to get a fairly slim bottle to fit, and even then I’m not convinced it won’t force its way out.
I wanted to love this bag, given my past experience with Travelon products. At most I prefer it just because no others come close to the functionality for travel. But two of the primary reasons I got it don’t work as expected.
